Omens on the one hand
by RS  admin@creationpie.org : 1024 x 640

1. Omens on the one hand
This content is being developed.

2. Matthew 22:14 Clamor calling
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. [kjv]
πολλοι γαρ εισιν κλητοι ολιγοι δε εκλεκτοι [gnt]

The English word "clamor" comes, through French, from the Latin word "clamor""shout, cry" which comes from the Latin word "clamo""cry out, complain" which is related to the ancient Greek word "καλέω""call". The "cl" in Latin changed into the "ll" in Spanish as in "llamar""summon, call".

Why do so many people who speak Spanish want others to join them and look at alpacas?

3. Omens on the one hand
In general, Latin-based words appear in parts of the GNT (Greek New Testament) where there are interactions with the Roman authorities such as Pilate.

The English word "omen" comes from the Latin word "omen""foreboding, omen" which comes from the Old Latin word "osmen""foreboding, omen".

The ancient Greek pair of words "ο μεν""that on the one hand" usually followed by "δε""but (on the other hand)". These two exact Greek words appear 5 times in Matthew, always spoken by Jesus.

Is there an important ordering on the hands listed? The separation is important.

Some of the apparent play on words used by Jesus include some Latin words as a cross-language play on words. Where these appear, the context often has to do with the power of Rome and the (later) Catholic church.

4. Stuck in the middle with you
It is best to be (mentally glued) or stuck in the middle with Jesus as a little child. And, if both of you agree on something, it will be done.

Song: Stuck in the middle with you
Song: Stuck in the middle with you.
Chorus: Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

In what year was the song released?
How should you defend yourself against an angry group of clowns?
The song "Stuck in the middle with you" (peaking at position 6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100) was written by Scottish musicians Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan and performed by their band Stealers Wheel in a parody of the style of Bob Dylan.

5. On the one hand
English saying: ... on the one hand ... on the other hand ...

Similar Greek construction: ... ο/ος μεν ... ο/ος δε ... Greek word order: ... as on the one hand ... as but/otherwise (on the other hand) ...

Does the order matter in this type of saying? [Truman and economists]

As on the one hand and smell or scent or odor

6. Usage in Matthew
Words Jesus others
μεν 5 1
ω μεν 1
ο μεν 5
ος μεν 1*
το μεν 3
τα μεν 1
οι μεν 1
ον μεν 1
εαν μεν 1
As on the one hand and smell or scent or odor That on the one hand and omen
The ancient Greek word "μεν""on the one hand" is used 20 times in Matthew.

*Changed by TR (Textus Receptus) from "ος""that" to "ο""that".

7. Verses in Matthew
In the five verses in Matthew, ask yourself the following questions. Since the TR adds one more, it can be determined if that change breaks the model in any way.

8. Matthew 9:37 Omens
Matthew 9:37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; [kjv]
τοτε λεγει τοις μαθηταις αυτου ο μεν θερισμος πολυς οι δε εργαται ολιγοι [gnt]

That on the one hand and omen
Might there me an "omen" here (on the one hand)?
Greek: ... on the one hand harvest many but on the other hand ... the workers [oath-takers] are few [oh wolves]

Might an "omen" be that later, during the Latin influence, definitions/mountains were moved, leaven mixed in, etc., to obscure the meaning of this verse?

Information sign More: Matthew 9:32-38 Casting out and harvest workers

9. Matthew 13:8
Matthew 13:8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. [kjv]
αλλα δε επεσεν επι την γην την καλην και εδιδου καρπον ο μεν εκατον ο δε εξηκοντα ο δε τριακοντα [gnt]

Are the numbers a time sequence of events? Could these be happening at the same time (e.g., in different places or hands). Does using the Greek meaning of "on the one hand" change usual meaning of the verse? Does the play on words with Latin "omen" have any meaning here? With the modified meaning (i.e., declarative statements), does it matter that Mark reverses the order of the numbers?

Information sign More: Matthew 13:3-23 KP1 Parable of the sower

10. Matthew 13:23 Gematria
Matthew 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. [kjv]
… ο μεν εκατον ο δε εξηκοντα ο δε τριακοντα [gnt]

Greek gematriaGreek, like Hebrew, associated letters with numbers. The study of this is called gematria. The most famous instance of gematria is the 666 from Revelation 13. Any gematria meaning of 100, 60 and 30 is not clear but may indicate some interesting connections.
Keep in mind that the historical connection of this parable is that of the time of Jesus in Judea where the Romans ruled and had let Herod (and descendent's) have some local rule.

11. Gematria of decreasing yields
SPQRThe symbol of Rome, the ruling power of the world at that time, in letters was SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus) (as an initialism) from the Latin phrase "senātus populusque rōmānus""The Roman Senate and People".

Gematria
value upper lower letter connection
100 Ρ ρ rho R for "Rome" (Latin and Greek)
60 Ξ ξ ski (composite letter KS)
Κ κ kappa K for "and" (Greek)
Σ σ sigma S for "Senate" (Latin)
30 Λ λ lambda L for "people" (Greek)
This is just one of many possible gematria connections.

12. Matthew and Mark
Matthew 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. [kjv]
ο δε επι την καλην γην σπαρεις ουτος εστιν ο τον λογον ακουων και συνιεις ος δη καρποφορει και ποιει ο μεν εκατον ο δε εξηκοντα ο δε τριακοντα [gnt]

Mark 4:8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. [kjv]
και αλλα επεσεν εις την γην την καλην και εδιδου καρπον αναβαινοντα και αυξανομενα και εφερεν εις εν τριακοντα και εν εξηκοντα και εν εκατον [gnt]

Mark repeats some of what Matthew writes but also changes and adds some things. Many details in Matthew are not in Mark (or Luke). Note the order of the numbers. Discuss:

13. Matthew 22:5 Hands
Matthew 22:5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: [kjv]
οι δε αμελησαντες απηλθον ος μεν εις τον ιδιον αγρον ος δε επι την εμποριαν αυτου [gnt]

... as on the one hand (they) went to his own/distinguished farm as but (on the other hand) (others) went onto their merchandise.

As on the one hand and smell or scent or odor

Did those "hidden" "smell" a "trap"? The TR changes "ὅς""as far as" to "ο""one" which breaks the play on words.

14. Matthew 22:5 Word play
Matthew 22:5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: [kjv]

15. Matthew 22:8
Matthew 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. [kjv]
τοτε λεγει τοις δουλοις αυτου ο μεν γαμος ετοιμος εστιν οι δε κεκλημενοι ουκ ησαν αξιοι [gnt]

Does the "on the one hand" the "wedding" is "ready" and "on the other hand" those that were "bidden" were not "worthy" change the perceived meaning of the verse?

16. Matthew 22:8 Word play
Matthew 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. [kjv]

Servent/subject and trick/deceipt/bait That on the one hand and omen Wedding and magic The but and in this way
Called and hidden Not were and not dogs Not were and not bird Worthy and not a shadow

The verses right before the Jehu false prophet verses have to do with the dogs eating Jezebel. This connection is not automatic so you should not be dogmatic about it!

The ancient Greek word "κίσσα""Eurasian jay (bird), craving for strange food during pregnancy". "κῐ́σσᾰν""Eurasian jay (bird)" (accusative).

17. Matthew 25:15 Talent accounting
Matthew 25:15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. [kjv]
και ω μεν εδωκεν πεντε ταλαντα ω δε δυο ω δε εν εκαστω κατα την ιδιαν δυναμιν και απεδημησεν ευθεως [gnt]

One servant was given 5 "talents". Discuss: Explain the reasoning for each. There are two cases for each.

18. Matthew 25:15

That on the one hand and omen
Might there me an "omen" here (on the one hand)?
The Greek "ω""omega" is similar in sound to "ο""omicron". How does this verse fit the model? Is the ordering of the giving of the talents important? Explain.

19. Matthew 26:24 Raca good
Matthew 26:24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed ! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. [kjv]

What is "good" to do? How might this be "raca"?

Does the "on the one hand" and "on the other hand" make a difference in how one might understand the meaning of this verse?

20. Matthew 26:24 Woe
Matthew 26:24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed ! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. [kjv]

Beautiful and raca
The ancient Greek word "οὐαί""woe, alas" is onomatopoeic in that, if one thinks of eagles (or vultures) lurking overhead ready to feast making a screeching sound as they swoop one gets an idea of the meaning. They are "birds" of prey (or pray).
Play: "that" and "there" "mind".
