Philippians 1b: A gracious favor of joy to Philippi
1. Philippians 1b: A gracious favor of joy to Philippi
This content completes Philippians 1 which is at
Philippians 1a: A gracious favor of joy to Philippi.
Paul started his letter to the Philippians using some words that have double meanings. On closer inspection, there are those at the church at Philippi who need to change their ways.
Paul is tactful in pointing this out.
The verses can be misinterpreted in modern English to be saying things that Paul did not really intend to say.
2. Salvation through prayer
Philippians 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, [kjv]
The "
shall turn" is a word used in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) only by Luke (one word) and in Job (entire phrase) in the
LXX (Septuagint). What might "
shall turn to my salvation" mean?
3. Chicago Transit Authority
The Chicago song "
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" was written and sung by Robert Lamm. [signature trumpets]
As I was walking down the street one day,
a man came up to me and asked me
what the time was that was on my watch ...
The group's original name was "
Chicago Transit Authority" but that organization did not like them using their name. [trademark law]
Chicago song: Does anyone really know what time it is? Next line?
Does anyone really care?
4. Philippians 1:19 Turn to my salvation
Philippians 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, [kjv]
How many attractive refrigerator magnet sermons could be given on what is said here?
The exact same four Greek words for "
shall turn to my salvation" in Philippians are "
shall turn to me for salvation" in Job in the
LXX. The follow-on words in Job are more interesting.
5. Job 13:16 Turn to my salvation
Job 13:16 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him. [kjv]
And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. [bs3]
Paul is going through trials and Job went through trials - both for eventual good. Paul appears to be calling the church leadership at Philippi "
frauds".
6. Psalms 118:22-24 Implications
Jesus spoke these two verses from Psalms in the
LXX in Matthew 21:42..
Psalms 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. [kjv]
118:23 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. [kjv]
What was unsaid appears to be the point of the previous two verses. One must fill in the missing parts and connect the dots.
118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. [kjv]
Knowing this, the next verse that starts "
therefore" which in the Greek is "
from these (things)" allows one to infer the basis for the what is said after the "
therefore". Might this also answer the question about by what "
authority" or "
lack of restraint" Jesus does these things?
7. Philippians 1:19
KJV: For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
8. Job 13:16
KJV: He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.
Brenton: And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him.
9. Preceding verses
10. Job 13:13
KJV: Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.
11. Job 13:14
KJV: Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?
12. Job 13:15
KJV: Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
13. Bold frankness
Philippians 1:20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. [kjv]
The Greek for "
earnest expectation" is, literally, "
from the heart". The Greek for "
hope" is a "
well-founded belief".
Paul is telling it like it is.
Ancient Greek:
"παρρησία" ≈ "frankness, openness" from:
"πᾶς" ≈ "every, all" as the "pan" in "pan-American".
"ῥῆσις" ≈ "utterance, speech" and related to "rhetoric".
14. False teachers
By contrast, the false teachers "
dare" to tell it like they want it to be (to their own advantage).
Verse 20: "παρρησία" ≈ "frankness, openness" as "bold" in KJV (King James Version).
Verse 14: "τολμάω" ≈ "dare" as "bold" in KJV.
Philippians 1:14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. [kjv]
Since Paul is "
out of the way", some "
dare" to speak the word "
recklessly" and "
without fear" (from God or Paul).
15. Modern Greek
16. Philippians 1:20
KJV: According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
17. Strongs - earnest expectation
- *G603 *2 ἀποκαραδοκία (ap-ok-ar-ad-ok-ee'-ah) : from a comparative of G575 and a compound of kara (the head) and G1380 (in the sense of watching); intense anticipation:--earnest expectation.
- Romans 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
- Philippians 1:20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that ...
18. Gains
Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. [kjv]
1:22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. [kjv]
1:23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: [kjv]
Paul will do the work of Christ until it is time for him to depart.
Matthew 6:27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? [kjv]
The word for "
stature" means "
age". Here, "
cubit" is a measure of "
time".
19. Philippians 1:21
KJV: For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
20. Fruit
21. Philippians 1:22
KJV: But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.
22. Philippians 1:23
KJV: For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
23. The flesh
Philippians 1:24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. [kjv]
Why is it more "
needful" for them? Remember the pun in verse 6.
- "having begun in" as "en-ar-ska-me-non"
- "in flesh remain" as "en-sar-ki-me-neen"
1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: [kjv]
Galatians 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? [kjv]
24. Philippians 1:24
KJV: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.
25. Confidence
Philippians 1:25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith; [kjv]
KJV: "
for your furtherance and joy of faith".
Better as: "
for your furtherance and favor/grace of faith".
- The ancient Greek word "προκοπή" ≈ "progress in a journey, improvement" and comes from "κόπτω" ≈ "cut" as in "cut forward".
Paul used this word back in verse 12.
1:12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; [kjv]
26. Philippians 1:25
KJV: And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;
27. Coming presence
Philippians 1:26 That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again. [kjv]
1:20 … but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ … [kjv]
The Greek for "
rejoicing" is "
boasting". In context, there appears to be a play on words between the Greek words for
"frankness" (verse 20) and
"coming" (verse 26) of "
Jesus" and/or of "
Paul".
28. Modern Greek
29. Philippians 1:26
KJV: That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.
30. Citizenship
Philippians 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; [kjv]
- The "conversation" is every interaction you have as a citizen of your community.Their Roman citizenship was highly valued.
- The "mind" is that of "soul" from which we get "psychology".
- The Greek for "striving together" has the word from which we get "athletics" as if in competition or "agony" (verse 30).
- The "one" as a "team effort" is repeated many times.
31. Philippians 1:27
KJV: Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
