Ezekiel 39:1-29

In the Olivet Discourse in Matthew 24, when asked about the "end times" Jesus talks of "all of it" (pun on "Olivet").

Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. [kjv]

24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. [kjv]

και ει μη εκολοβωθησαν αι ημεραι εκειναι ουκ αν εσωθη πασα σαρξ δια δε τους εκλεκτους κολοβωθησονται αι ημεραι εκειναι [gnt]

How could it be possible that no flesh would be saved?

For 2000 years, since the time of Jesus, no one could understand how "no flesh would be saved". Until 1945.

Ezekiel 38 and 39 prophecy of what, since 1945, appears to be an attack of Israel from the north that involves nuclear weapons.

The LXX (Septuagint) includes the ruler as the ancient Greek word "ρως" ≈ "Ros" which appears to refer to what is the modern Greek "Ρωσία" (Ro-SEE-a) ≈ "Russia" that is from the Byzantine Greek " Ῥῶς" ≈ "Russia".

Ezekiel 39:2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: [kjv]

και συναξω σε και καθοδηγησω σε και αναβιβω σε απ εσχατου του βορρα και αναξω σε επι τα ορη του ισραηλ [lxx]

The Hebrew idea is that of "sixthing" them or destroying one "sixth" of them.

The English idea, from the Latin, is that of "decimate" as in "tenth" them as in destroying one "tenth" of them.

Ezekiel 39:7

Ezekiel 39:9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years: [kjv]

και εξελευσονται οι κατοικουντες τας πολεις ισραηλ και καυσουσιν εν τοις οπλοις πελταις και κοντοις και τοξοις και τοξευμασιν και ραβδοις χειρων και λογχαις και καυσουσιν εν αυτοις πυρ επτα ετη [lxx]

How can weapons be burnt for fuel for seven years?

Plutonium-grade nuclear weapon material can be adapted for use in a nuclear reactor to produce energy.

Ezekiel 39:9

Hebrew: ויצאו ישבי ערי ישראל ובערו והשיקו בנשק ומגן וצנה בקשת ובחצים ובמקל יד וברמח ובערו בהם אש שבע שנים׃

Greek: και εξελευσονται οι κατοικουντες τας πολεις ισραηλ και καυσουσιν εν τοις οπλοις πελταις και κοντοις και τοξοις και τοξευμασιν και ραβδοις χειρων και λογχαις και καυσουσιν εν αυτοις πυρ επτα ετη

Ezekiel 39:10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD. [kjv]

For almost 2500 years, since the time of Ezekiel, no one could really understand how weapons could be burnt for fuel for seven years.

Ezekiel 39:10

Ezekiel 39:11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon–gog. και εσται εν τη ημερα εκεινη δωσω τω γωγ τοπον ονομαστον μνημειον εν ισραηλ το πολυανδριον των επελθοντων προς τη θαλασση και περιοικοδομησουσιν το περιστομιον της φαραγγος και κατορυξουσιν εκει τον γωγ και παν το πληθος αυτου και κληθησεται το γαι το πολυανδριον του γωγ [lxx]

39:12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land. [kjv]

και κατορυξουσιν αυτους οικος ισραηλ ινα καθαρισθη η γη εν επταμηνω [lxx]

Seven months is a long time to cleanse a battlefield. Why does it need "cleansed"?

Ezekiel 39:12

Ezekiel 39:13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD. [kjv]

39:14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search. [kjv]

και ανδρας δια παντος διαστελουσιν επιπορευομενους την γην θαψαι τους καταλελειμμενους επι προσωπου της γης καθαρισαι αυτην μετα την επταμηνον και εκζητησουσιν [lxx]

Why might "professionals" or "men of continual employment" be needed for the cleanup?

39:16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land. [kjv]

Why might a special sign be needed so that professionals can bury the remains?

Ezekiel 39:17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood. Ezekiel 39:17

Ezekiel 39:18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. [kjv]

Ezekiel 39:18

KJV: Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.

Hebrew: בשר גבורים תאכלו ודם נשיאי הארץ תשתו אילים כרים ועתודים פרים מריאי בשן כלם׃

Ezekiel 39:19

Ezekiel 39:20

Ezekiel 39:21

Ezekiel 39:23

KJV: And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.

Hebrew: וידעו הגוים כי בעונם גלו בית ישראל על אשר מעלו בי ואסתר פני מהם ואתנם ביד צריהם ויפלו בחרב כלם׃
