The English word
"octopus", a sea creature with eight tentacles, comes, through Latin, from the ancient Greek word
"ὀκτώπους" ≈ "eight-footed, octopus" and comes from two Greek words.
"ὀκτώ" ≈ "eight" as in the first part of "octogon".
"πούς" ≈ "foot" which is the source of "pew".
The
modern Greek word shortens the
ancient Greek word to
"χταπόδι" (hta-PO-thee) ≈ "octopus" although the original Greek word is still understood.
Aristotle talks about the octopus including their ability to change color to blend into their surroundings.
